Common misunderstandings

If one partner in a settled relationship gets symptoms, the other partner must have just slept with someone else.
If this is your situation, remember two things: you may have had the virus for months or even years before noticing the symptoms; and even if you did catch it from your current partner, he or she may have been carrying the virus all the time you’ve been together without knowing it.

People who get genital herpes must sleep around.
This is the most common myth about Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in general: that if you get one, you’ve done something to deserve it. It’s simply not true. Genital herpes is so common, the odds are quite high to catch it if you’re sexually active. Even if you only have a few sexual partners in your life.

What makes this persistent idea particularly ironic, is that four out of five people with herpes don’t know they have it. So the very people who spread the myth could also help spread the virus!

You know if you had genital herpes
Genital herpes symptoms and where they appear vary enormously. They can appear on your genitals, of course, as the classic ulcers or blisters, but not necessarily. Genital herpes can be mistaken for a recurring case of thrush or jock itch. The virus, in fact, lives in the nervous system and can move from the original site of infection to another. So what might appear as a rash on the buttocks, the thighs or even the fingers, could in fact be genital herpes.
