First outbreak

The first outbreak of genital herpes can be quite severe. People may experience flu-like symptoms such as fever, back, leg and joint pain as well as genital blisters and sores.

Some people may only experience mild symptoms of genital herpes such as tingling, itching and redness with their first outbreak.

Most people have 4 – 6 outbreaks of genital herpes in the first year that they have the virus. For this reason it is important to speak to your doctor about the lifestyle modifications and treatment options that can reduce the number and severity of outbreaks.

Sexual activity should be avoided during a genital herpes outbreak. It is also possible to pass on the virus via viral shedding Glossary: Viral shedding
