Emotional effects

A lot of people who are diagnosed with genital herpes say that the emotional effect of the condition far outweighs the physical effect. The stigma of genital herpes is one of the main reasons for this, which is why it is important to learn as much as you can about the condition.

Talking to people who have been in a similar situation and who can empathise with how you are feeling is a positive way to deal with the emotional effects of your diagnosis. This includes feelings of anger, shame and lowered self worth.

It may also help to speak to a qualified professional such as your doctor, a psychologist or counsellor.

Genital herpes is not a reflection of you as a person. Anyone in a sexual relationship can get genital herpes.
