Just diagnosed with herpes
Many people feel shocked, angry and ashamed when first diagnosed with genital herpes, but it is important to get the facts and not be misinformed by common misconceptions about genital herpes.
Genital herpes is not an indication of promiscuity. It doesn’t necessarily mean that your partner has been unfaithful to you. It is a common condition. 1 in 8 adult Australians have it. 80% don’t realise it and unfortunately may pass it on.
Being diagnosed with genital herpes doesn’t mean that you can’t have a loving relationship or a healthy sex life. It just means that you need to take a few simple precautions.
The main thing is to take control. Educating yourself about genital herpes is a good first step. Speak to your doctor. Find out what you are dealing with. Explore the genital herpes treatment options that suit your lifestyle and current circumstance.
On an emotional level, it is important that you have support while you adjust to this new situation. Speak to your doctor, a counsellor or people who have been in a similar situation by joining a genital herpes support group. Confide in your partner or close family or friends if you feel comfortable doing so.
Remember, there is no right or wrong way to deal with your diagnosis, but it is important that you speak to your doctor to work out the best way to treat and manage the condition.
