How do you catch genital herpes?

No-one knows for sure what triggers each outbreak of herpes, but many people mention that the symptoms tend to reappear when they get run-down for any reason: too many late nights, working long hours, skipping meals, etc.

Some women find that their periods tend to set off regular outbreaks, and anything that damages the skin on and around the genitals can also lead to herpes symptoms appearing. The damage can be caused by things as simple as friction during sex or exposure to strong sunlight.

Another infection that causes a rash or sores may produce a 'chain reaction' and trigger a herpes outbreak as well.

It can be hard to sort out physical triggers from emotional ones, but most people whose symptoms keep coming back feel that stress also plays a part. Of course, the stress may be caused by (or contribute to) circumstances that also make you feel run-down: things like overwork or losing sleep because you’re lying awake worrying.

Getting the right treatment can of course help relieve this sort of vicious cycle, but your doctor will also be able to arrange counselling if you decide it could be helpful.
